What’s the Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas?

  • While both are produced from crude oil and combustible, premium gas differs when it comes to octane levels. The octane level of premium gasoline is 90 or above, and it helps your engine stay clean to avoid pollution.
  • Regular, or unleaded gas, is the most common form of gas that most Stockton drivers use in their vehicle. It’s better for the environment and your health than gasoline with lead. Its octane rating, which shows how well it can fight inappropriate combustion, is 87.

Learn the Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

Although these two types of gas may seem similar, there are several factors that set them apart:

  • Octane Rating: Depending on the octane level, there are fewer chances of the engine knocking, and this can damage your vehicle. Also called pre-ignition, this isn’t common with premium gasoline.
  • Engine Suitability: Regular unleaded gas burns faster than premium gas, which is why it’s considered more suited for engines with low compression ratios. Engines that have high compression ratios benefit better from premium gas.
  • Price: Premium gas can cost between 20 and 40 cents more per gallon than regular unleaded gas, which adds up if you are driving through Stanislaus frequently.

Keep these tips in mind when choosing between premium vs. regular gas:

  • If premium gas is not required, it won’t boost the performance or longevity of the vehicle.
  • If premium gas is required, using regular gas typically doesn’t harm the vehicle. However, if you start hearing a knocking when using regular gas, switch to premium.
  • Premium gas may be necessary if you have a high-performance vehicle like a Mercedes-Benz AMG model
