How to Do a Tire Rotation Yourself

Whether you rotate your tires at home near Merced or bring it to our Modesto service center, a tire rotation is an essential maintenance step that shouldn’t get skipped. Regularly rotating tires provides better traction on the roads while extending the life of your tires. Learn how to rotate tires at home, and don’t hesitate to reach out to our service center with any questions.

Why Are Tire Rotations Important?

Due to different road conditions and driving habits, your tires don’t wear evenly. Because of the impact that tires have while turning, the outside edges of your front tires show more wear while the rear wheels wear more evenly. If you leave the tires in place, they wear down at different rates over time, and you will need to replace them much sooner.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Front and rear-wheel drive cars will need tires rotated every 5,000-7,500 miles, while AWD models need more frequent rotations done every 3,000 – 5,000 miles. This is because they are actively engaged and end up wearing faster. Like with most Mercedes-Benz services, it’s best to refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual information for specific recommendations.

If you don’t rotate often enough, you’ll end up needing new tires more often — learn how to read your tires to know which ones to choose for a replacement.

The Importance of Tire Position

  • FWD Tires: You can move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left/right positions. However, when you move the rear tires to the front, be sure to switch the right and left tires.
  • RWD Tires: You will do the opposite with RWD vehicles. The rear tires get moved to the front of the car in the same left/right positions, but when the front tires get moved to the rear, you will switch the left and right tires.

How to Rotate Your Tires at Home Near Stockton

If you’re going to rotate your tires, you will need a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of jack stands (typically sold in a set of two). After you have the tools needed, follow these steps below:

  1. Engage your parking brake as a safety precaution.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but don’t take them off. This makes unscrewing them when the tire is elevated easier.
  3. Lift one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove the tires one by one.
  5. Check the tire pressure to ensure they’re correctly filled. Rotate them according to the correct pattern for your tires. Put the tire back onto the wheel mount and screw the lug nuts on as far as you can by hand.
  6. Lower the car from the jack stands and finish tightening the nuts with the lug wrench. Work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star pattern to tighten everything evenly. The brake rotor could warp if the lug nuts don’t get tightened evenly.
